Price: Cheap but not too cheap ($37 per person - which we think is high for yumcha but we ate 34 dishes...)
Highlights - all the traditional yum cha dishes, mango pudding
Good to eat a decent yum cha after such a long time all the old school dishes were good.
There were some newer ones (e.g. prawn mince surrounding pineapple covered in almond slivers and fried - middle photo) which were tasty but we're not sure why they bothered.
Mango pudding was very good, really strong mango taste.
Seems expensive given 6 of us ate 34 dishes...but that's about $6.64 per dish which is about right...we just ate too much...
Over the last few years it seems the Cantonese have been losing the battle for Chinese food supremacy. The introduction of Shanghainese/Taiwanese places such as New Shanghai and Din Tai Fung and other mainland cuisines seems to have shifted the customer away from Cantonese. On top of this there's been a decline in quality, Fook Yuen in Chatswood was sold and isn't as good, Tim Ho Wan lost their Head Chef in a matter of months and has stretched themselves thin opening 3 stores in a short space of time. Hopefully the players like Marigold and East Ocean are still decent...the Phoenix group is generally good.
